Composite Technology Corporation (CTC) has completed the first commercial overhead installation of its proprietary Aluminum Conductor Composite Core (ACCC) high-performance electrical power cable.
This initial installation in the city of Holland, Michigan utilized over three thousand feet of ACCC conductor. The higher performance ACCC conductor replaced existing conventional utility power cable in the municipality's power distribution system. The installation utilized CTC's ACCC ""Hawk"" size utility power cable and spanned several support structures while utilizing compression dead ends and splices jointly developed by CTC and FCI/Burndy for installing the cable. The city of Holland is planning on upgrading its distribution system during the next few years to meet the growing energy demands of its customers.

""The city of Holland has an ongoing need to meet increasing power demand while maintaining system reliability and minimizing costs,"" said Dave Durham, Superintendent of Electric Transmission and Distribution for the Holland Board of Public Works. ""After a comprehensive review of available technology, we found that CTC's ACCC cable is the most cost-effective solution to our power distribution problems. We can significantly increase system capacity while the cables unique high-temperature performance characteristics will improve reliability. Since we can install the cable on existing structures, we avoid significant costs that would be required by alternative solutions.""
CTC's recent installation at the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI) facilities in Haslet, Texas utilized approximately two miles of ACCC conductor. The installation used CTC's ACCC ""Drake"" size utility power cable and spanned over five utility support structures. A line crew from Great Southwestern Construction, a member of the MYR Group and a leading supplier of a full range of services within the electrical construction industry, completed the installation with assistance from CTC's technical support personnel. Installation hardware, tools and dies used are conventional industry standard products, with the exception of the compression dead end and splice assemblies that have been specifically designed for use with CTC's ACCC cable. The ability to use conventional equipment and installation methods means customers can now expect to install ACCC cable in similar time periods, and at similar costs, as existing cable with minimal training for their construction personnel.
