A Malaysian-German joint venture company has constructed a 35m-long carbon-fibre yacht, the biggest built in South-East Asia.
DK Composites (Dian Kreatif) Director Habibur Rahman Ibrahim said the 7.5m wide ultra-fast Maiden Hong Kong, an advanced composite yacht, weighs about 35 tonnes.
Work on the vessel started in 2002 and is expected to be completed by October this year in Langkawi, Malaysia.
“The yacht will be transported from to the Tanjung Kling jetty later this week to be taken on a barge to Langkawi for it to be commissioned by project manager Peter Warren and a team of New Zealand boat builders”, according to Habidur.
The yacht’s keel is a high-strength steel fin fabricated in Italy with a China-made tungsten bulb that weighs 11 tonnes. Special carbon fibre, normally used only for fighter aircraft or satellites, has been used to construct the 40m-high mast.
It is estimated that the Maiden Hong Kong will cost $5.2 million (USD) when fully commissioned.
The racing yacht was designed by Argentinean Juan Kouyoumdjian, and was being built for Hong Kong businessman Frank Pong. Pong is planning to enter it in the Hong Kong/Vietnam race at the end of October or the Raja Muda International Regatta in Malaysia in mid-November, according to Habidur.
Three yachts built by the company – Plis Play, Erivale and Hollywood Boulevard – had won the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, Hamble Winter Series 2003 and Raja Muda International Regatta respectively last year.
DK Composites is a German-Malaysian joint venture established in Melaka, Malaysia in 1997. Originally founded to facilitate the production of four major dome projects in the Malaysia, the company then ventured into manufacturing small and medium-sized sailboats and later yachts using the same process and technology employed in the manufacturing of domes. DK has since established itself as a major producer of large high tech composite products.
