TPI Composites is being awarded a $6,783,216 firm-fixed-price contract, for construction of 16 CFRP US Naval Academy 44 foot sail training craft (STC).
The STCs will be constructed of fibreglass reinforced plastic and used for professional development and training for midshipmen.
Work will be performed in Warren, R.I., and is expected to be completed by April 2008. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The contract was not competitively procured.
TPI Composites won the bid to produce 16 with a follow on option of an additional 8, 44' training sloops for use by the United States Naval Academy. The construction scheme allows for the use of continuous fibre woven or knitted to a specific material weight by direction and uses both a vinylester and general purpose polyester thermoset matrix system.

TPI Composites built the current stock of STC’s for the US Naval Academy over 15 years ago, which are still being used today. They also hold the patent for the SCRIMP (Seemann Composites Resin Infusion Moulding Process) manufacturing process and pioneered the worlds first epoxy resin used for infusion (through SP Systems).
Applications for composites in the sports and leisure sector will be showcased by various exhibitors at Composites Europe in Stuttgart, Germany, on 6-8 November.
The programme has been announced for the second Composites in Sport Conference and Exhibition, being held at Loughborough University, UK, on 3-4 October 2018.
