The aerospace group of Henkel is to acquire SIA Adhesives (Sovereign), leader in phenolic adhesives, composite surfacing films and composite bonding films.
SIA Adhesives, based in Ohio, USA, is a spin-off of B F Goodrich Chemical, and key supplier to both Airbus and Boeing. The acquisition provides Henkel with new complementary products and key specification positions.
Lyndon Smith, Vice President & General Manager said that, “the acquisition of SIA Adhesives continues to demonstrate the willingness of Henkel to invest in aerospace adhesives, which brings enhanced capabilities to our customers. Henkel adds a global infrastructure to SIA Adhesives, while SIA brings key specification positions and products to the growing aerospace market for composite adhesives.”
The aerospace portion of SIA Adhesives will be consolidated into the Henkel Bay Point, California manufacturing site over the next 12 to 15 months. The goal is to retain all SIA Adhesives aerospace personnel at the sales, marketing and technical levels to both aid in the transfer and to support the continued growth of the aerospace business.
Sue Cooper, Business Director for the aerospace group of Sovereign adds, “Our association with Henkel allows global access to markets, along with additional resources for new product development. Plastilock adhesives are well known in the aerospace industry, and we have always been impressed with the market position and innovation of the Hysol brand.”
While Henkel does not offer financial details on separate business segments, Lyndon Smith reports that “both businesses have grown at double digit rates over the last two years, and this growth is projected to continue,” partly because of the improved health of the aerospace industry and the rising use of composites. Many Henkel products allow composites to be used more effectively. Products like lightning strike composite surfacing films, liquid shims, advanced preimpregated peel plies, and new resins to support the growing resin transfer molding processes have all provided new opportunities for innovation.
Alvant has been appointed to work on a two-year, £28 million project titled Large Landing Gear of the Future, which aims to deliver a 30% weight reduction and assist the aerospace industry’s drive to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Hexadrone’s 3D printed Tundra prototype, manufactured by CRP Technology via laser sintering (LS) technology using Windform SP and Windform XT 2.0 carbon composite materials, has won the Red Dot Award 2018 in the drone category.
UK company Norco Composites has invested in a larger spray booth and a new cutting and kitting machine to enable the company to increase productivity in line with growing demand from its marine customers.
