Jupiter Plast A/S of Denmark has built the first seven front ends for the series of the Siemens AVANTO train for Paris.
The sandwich construction chosen incorporates a low density (50 kg/m³) structural PMI foam core. Rohacell 51 S was the only core material to fully meet the requirements as per the specification. The core material’s choice was prompted by the fire, smoke and toxicity requirements and the structural requirements. Due to the excellent impact behaviour of the PMI foam, the required crash test, where a 60 t load crashed the front end, was passed with a very good result. Due to the unsurpassed strength-to-weight ratio, PMI foams offer the highest potential for weight saving. Compared to e.g. PVC foams the core density can be reduced by 25% while providing the same level of mechanical properties.
Additionally the surface resin absorption of the 100% closed cell PMI foam is significantly lower compared to PVC or PEI foam. An intensive study carried out at the Technical University of Stockholm (KTH) in Sweden concluded that the fatigue behaviour of a PMI-cores sandwich is significantly better compared to the PVC- or PEI-foam cored sandwich version.
The new front end was presented to the public during the recent INNOTRANS expo in Berlin.
Toho Tenax is introducing a high-tensile, highly shock-resistant prepreg that incorporates carbon fibre developed for aerospace applications and carbon nanotubes (CNTs).
