Cowling components for Mercury Marine's Verado outboard boat engine recently swept the annual Product Design Competition, sponsored by the Society of the Plastics Industry's Structural Plastics Division.
Capturing top awards for innovation and groundbreaking design, the cowl consists of six parts injection moulded from DuPont high-performance plastics by Bemis Manufacturing.
The cowl won the Conference Award, the People's Choice Award, the IDSA/Plastics News Design Award, and was also recognized as the most innovative entry in the competition's Recreation and Leisure category.
The top cowl is the largest component ever injection molded from glass reinforced nylon. Made of a 33 percent glass reinforced DuPont Zytel nylon, it is shaped like a giant scoop. The rear cowl is also moulded from Zytel. The front cowl is moulded from DuPont Minlon mineral/glass reinforced nylon for added flatness. The lower cowling consists of two parts moulded from DuPont Surlyn Reflection Series supergloss alloy for superior gloss without paint.
In addition to the cowl parts, the Verado engine has 15 other components made of various DuPont high-performance plastics.
