Dow has announced its selection of Hardcore Composites and RL Industries as recipients of its 2003 Americas Fabricator Excellence Awards (FEA).
Dow runs its FEA competition each year to honor fabricators for overall excellence and innovation in the use of composites based on Derakane and Derakane Momentum Epoxy Vinyl Ester Resins.

""This year’s winners have done just that by taking advantage of Dow’s latest product technology and combining innovation with their capabilities in process know-how to fabricate high quality FRP parts displacing traditional materials.""
The FEA entries were judged by a panel of fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) industry experts: Larry Blankenship, technical project leader for composites at Dow; Matthew Belford, technical service specialist at Dow; Judy Hazen, editor of High-Performance Composites; and Siebert.
Following are descriptions of this year’s winning projects:
Dow is honoring Hardcore Composites for excellence in fabricating composite wind fairings for the New York Metropolitan Bridge and Tunnel Authority’s Bronx-Whitestone Bridge. The wind fairings replaced 7,400 feet of heavy steel trusses.
Hardcore Composites fabricated the wind fairings through vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) with Derakane 8084 Resin from Dow. The engineers chose this resin because of its exceptional combination of properties which will help the wind fairings stand up to the wear and tear of time, extending their life span and reducing long-term maintenance costs. This is claimed to be the largest use of structural composites in the world, having taken 890,000 pounds of FRP to complete the project.
Dow is honoring RL Industries for the fabrication of a high temperature, dual-laminate FRP chemical absorber column for use by Rubicon Inc. in Geismar, Louisiana. The application needed to work in temperatures greater than 250 deg F. RL Industries fabricated the absorber column using a combination of hand lay up and filament winding with Derakane 470HT-400 Resin. This resin offers high chemical resistance in combination with temperature performance. For RL Industries, the availability of this resin made it possible to complete the project.
