Sandwich Construction for Skjold Fast Patrol Boats

23 January 2004

In addition to the use of PVC cores previously reported, Umoe Mandal has made extensive use of Rohacell PMI foam in their 45m Skjold MTB high-speed vessel, measuring in length.

Currently the second vessel of a series of 6 in total is built in Norway. This catamaran is designed for maximum speed, in which context weight saving is the most important issue.

Rohacell has been chosen for elements of the bulkheads, main deck and superstructure, as well as for hull and exhaust duct sections where the sandwich structure is exposed to higher temperatures. PMI foams have been approved by DNV according to their Det Norske Veritas’ Rules for Classification of High Speed and Light Craft since 1994. Recently Rohacell sandwich solutions passed the IMO-HSC Code regulations for Fire resisting division, which are approved according to DNV Certificate No. F-16965.
