MSC.Software has launched the 3rd annual technology seminar in the highly popular “Black Metal or Black Art?” series : “A Review of Virtual Product Development (VPD) Techniques for Composite Materials and Components”.
Virtual Product Development is already established as a standard component in nearly every commercial design to manufacture process. Widely accessible, infinitely variable, and highly cost effective, today’s computer aided technologies allow almost every aspect of design, performance, and manufacture, to be exhaustively explored by manipulation of potential design solutions in a virtual development environment. Design applications in composite materials are no exception, and the challenging solutions which these materials offer, continues to ensure that Virtual Product Development techniques for Composite Materials remains a “hot” discussion topic.
Aerospace, Automotive/AutoSport, Marine/Naval, and Sports & Leisure, and Construction, are just some of the industries in which computational techniques are allowing designers to apply composite materials with an increasing level of sophistication and innovation. As these new applications continue to expand the envelope of composite material design, there is an increasing requirement to understand, verify, and ultimately optimise the engineering performance using these materials. Catastrophic, often high profile, failures continue to remind us that engineering design with composite materials is still a developing science, a fact reflected in the provocative ‘Black Metal or Black Art?’ title of the seminar series.
“Black Metal or Black Art? - 2003” is the third MSC.Software Seminar to explore developments in computer aided technology for composite material applications. Through technical and review presentations, invited application case studies, and partners’ exhibits, this latest seminar will present the most up to date review of the software, hardware systems and professional services available to today’s practitioners of composite material design technology.

In keeping with the composite materials technology theme, the seminar will be held in the Ayrton Senna Suite at the new Williams F1 Conference Centre at Grove, Oxfordshire, UK, on Wednesday 12 March, 2003.
