Lockheed Martin Names U.K. Teammates On Watchkeeper Bid

23 June 2002

Meggitt Defence Systems and Supacat will be part of the Lockheed Martin [LMT] U.K. Integrated Systems' team bidding for the Watchkeeper battlefield surveillance system.

Meggitt is to build the Spectre 3 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), an advanced delta wing air vehicle with a three meter wingspan and the latest carbon fiber technology, for reconnaissance.

Supacat will provide the 6X6 High Mobility Truck air portable vehicle, which will help launch the air vehicle and which will carry the ground station for Spectre 3.

""Our strategy all along has been to incorporate the best equipment from the world's premier suppliers in a particular sector,"" Andy Head, Lockheed Martin U.K. Integrated Systems' marketing director, said in a statement. ""Both Meggitt and Supacat have earned their places on our team through merit, and it is excellent to see these UK companies playing a significant role.""

Watchkeeper is to field a UAV capable of intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance. Competing teams for the program include Lockheed Martin, France's Thales, Northrop Grumman [NOC] and BAE SYSTEMS.

The United Kingdom is to narrow the field of competitors to two in September.
