Vought Forms Sonic Cruiser Technology Development Sub-Team

Vought Aircraft Industries, Inc. is bringing together a tailored group of world-class companies to support its participation on the Sonic Cruiser technology development team.

Today Vought announced the first companies that will become its enterprise team. The companies are Alcoa Inc., ATK Composites Co., Cincinnati Machine, Cytec Engineered Materials, Nova-Tech Engineering, and Parker Aerospace. Vought and its team members will help provide an integrated set of design, machine tool and advanced materials technologies for the Sonic Cruiser development effort. Boeing Commercial Airplanes named Vought to its Sonic Cruiser technology development team in February.

""We have tapped a specific group of leading companies that will bring a wide variety of skills to the program - companies that are the best at what they do. Working cooperatively together, we will help meet the technology requirements for the Sonic Cruiser.""

Vought chose its teammates based on each company's technical capabilities and business strategies. Alcoa is one of the world's leading producer of metallic aerospace products. ATK is the largest U.S. producer of filament-wound and fiber-placed composite aerospace structures. Cincinnati Machine is the world's largest producer of automated composite fiber placement and tape laying systems. Cytec Engineered Materials produces the latest composite materials used exclusively on the F-22 and Joint Strike Fighter aircraft. Nova-Tech Engineering is a premier aerospace tooling and automation company, providing advanced turnkey manufacturing and assembly solutions. Parker Aerospace is one of the world's largest producers of flight control, hydraulic, and fuel systems and components for military and commercial aircraft and their engines.

Vought intends to include additional companies to its Sonic Cruiser enterprise team, primarily from foreign markets. ""We understand that key elements for successful technology development exist around the world,"" Risley said. ""That's why it's important to form a global team.""

The Sonic Cruiser is a new airplane concept unveiled by Boeing in March last year. The airplane has a dramatic new configuration and is designed to fly as fast as Mach 0.98, shortening travel times with fuel consumption per passenger comparable to today's best performing widebody twinjets.
