The rainfall is benefiting the fishing and nautical segments in Brazil.
Sales of stern drive engine may grow by 15% this year from 11,000 to 12,500 units. The commercialization of aluminum boats towards fishing and of glass fiber vessels is also increasing. The Rio de Janeiro-headquartered company Mercury Marine do Brasil aims to sell 3,400 stern engines over this year, a 21,4% boost in comparison to the 2,800 sold in 2001. According to the company, 70% of its sales matches to motors towards fishing and leisure. The fishing products dealer Martinelli Pesca & Nautica based in Ribeirao Preto (Sao Paulo state) aims to increase sales by between 35% and 40% over this year. 50% of the company sales are through catalogues and telemarketing, while 15% of the sales are through Internet and 35% at the store. The accessories accounts for 40% of the company sales.
The Santa Catarina-based shipyard Fibrafort, leader in the domestic market of glass fiber boats of 15 to 22 feet size, sold 800 boats over 2001 and expects a 5% increase on businesses over this year. The aquatic motorcycles sales should raise by 30% over this year in comparison to the 1,200 units sold in Brazil over 2001, according to the association of boats producers Acobar (Associacao Brasileira dos Construtores de Barcos e Implementos). Acobar has 117 affiliated companies and has recently firmed a partnership with ABN Amro Bank, which provides consumer direct credit. Sales of stern drive engines reached a peak of 20,000 units/year in 1996 and 1997. They languished to 9,000 units over 1999 due to the currency devaluation and started to recover by 2001. The nautical and fishing market amounts to US$300mil per year in Brazil.
