Universities and technical educational institutes throughout the world are invited to participate in a competition for the construction and testing of a catapult of composite profile material.
The competition will be held early July of 2003. The total amount of premiums will be ca 10.000 EURO, to be given in awards. The purpose of the competition is to increase the knowledge of FRP composite materials in general and of pultruded profiles in particular.
Building a catapult produced of pultruded composite materials gives several engineering challenges within the fields of ballistics, mechanics, statics, dynamics and material science. Furthermore, the interesting, practical experience of building and assembling an efficient machine will give the participants knowledge of composite materials and their properties. The competition will also give the participants the opportunity to meet colleagues as well as to build up a network all over the world.
A successful design will launch a projectile (a 6kg bowling ball) which will impact a designated target with a high degree of accuracy. Your design should include provisions for adjusting the range of the impact point. Each team should develop their operating rules, including rules of conduct, roles and responsibilities, decision making, conflict resolution, peer reviews, and record keeping.
