Solectria Corporation has been awarded a Phase II Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program by the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) to investigate the use of its proprietary DIAPHORM composite preforming technology in the production of composite ballistic armor components.
The goal of the two-year, $730k program is to investigate how Solectria's binder preforming technology affects the performance of composite ballistic armor, and to develop optimized binder systems for use in the DIAPHORM process during production of composite ballistic armor.
""We are pleased to have been awarded this innovative research program,"" said Vasilios Brachos, manager of Solectria's Composite Forming Technologies division. ""Our proprietary DIAPHORM technology can help produce advanced composite material parts faster and at a lower cost than is possible using traditional manufacturing methods. Particularly exciting is the potential for using the binder systems not only as a DIAPHORM process element, but also as a key to tailoring final product properties to match the need of a specific application as critical as military ballistic armor,"" said Brachos.
The University of Delaware Center for Composite Materials (CCM), in its role as a program subcontractor, will evaluate and compare the performance binder systems by conducting structural testing of panels made from various combinations of binders. CCM is ARL's Materials Center of Excellence in Composites, and Solectria is one of the key members of CCM's Industrial Consortium.
Solectria's Composite Forming Technologies division specializes in material process technologies and the production of composite parts.
