Lightweight Armor Order for U.S. Army Armored Security Vehicle ``ASV''

02 December 2002

Simula has received an order from Textron Systems to produce lightweight ceramic/composite applique armor kits.

These armor kits will be employed on the U.S. Army's M1117 Armored Security Vehicle (ASV), also known as the Guardian. The production order is for 25 armor kits with a contract value of approximately $1.375 million. The contract includes options for 24 additional kits, which could bring the total value of the contract up to $2.75 million. Production begins in the fourth quarter of 2002 and is expected to be completed in 2003.

The ASV is a four-wheeled light armored vehicle, manufactured by Textron Systems

The external armor panels provide ballistic protection against various small-arms and fragment threats with a minimum weight penalty. The lightweight armor kit enhances the ASV's ground speed and agility, as well as air transportability. Simula has manufactured armor for the initial 54 ASVs that have been ordered by the Army, and this latest order will complete the armor systems for the Army's current order.
