Airbus signs deals with four Japanese parts makers

05 April 2002

Airbus Industrie said it has signed deals worth more than 650 mln usd with four Japanese parts suppliers for its A380 aircraft programme.

It said Sumitomo Metal Industries Inc, Toray Corp, Toho Tenax Corp and JAMCO Corp will supply carbon cross beams, carbon fibre and titanium sheets, with the first delivery of parts to begin in early 2003.

"Today's agreements are just the first of a series, with more to come, as we are progressing our talks with other Japanese companies and we are confident that more and more will join our A380 programme," Noel Forgeard, president and chief executive of Airbus, said in a statement.

Nine customers have ordered a total of 97 A380s so far, Airbus said, adding that the first 555-seat A380 is due to enter into service in early 2006.
