The JEC 2000 was characterized by unprecedented levels of business and international activities, with 17,409 visitors and over 700 exhibitors. In 2000, 56% of visitors were from outside France and 85 countries were represented. The JEC Composites Show 2001 expects almost 800 exhibitors with, in particular, new materials, technologies and applications.

Northwestern University researchers have become the first to image and analyze a class of nanostructures that are stronger and lighter than steel and that could be used in the transportation industry, possibly as hard coatings on gears to improve the efficiency of vehicles or as an oxidation-resistant outer coating for airplane windows.

Lockheed Martin demonstrates low-cost manufacturing

Lockheed Martin Space Systems operations Advanced Technology Center, working with the structural design engineers from the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) program, successfully demonstrated use of a low-cost, vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) process to manufacture a large, complex structure integral to the TRIDENT II D5 fleet ballistic missile.

Ceramics Process Systems Corporation showed a net loss of $194 thousand on revenue of $5.0 million for the fiscal year ended December 30, 2000. This compares with a net income of $238 thousand on revenue of $4.8 million for the year ended January 1, 2000.


Owens Corning Sells Engineered Pipe Systems Business

Owens Corning has sold nearly all of its Engineered Pipe Systems business to Saudi Arabian Amiantit Company, a joint stock company headquartered in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, and listed on the Riyadh Stock Exchange. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

Johns Manville Completes Purchase of Skloplast

Johns Manville has completed the acquisition of Skloplast a.s., a fiber glass manufacturing company located in Trnava, Slovakia. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. ""Skloplast gives us a significant presence in European fiber glass reinforcements which will allow Johns Manville to better support our global customers,"" said Jerry Henry, chairman and CEO of Johns Manville. ""Skloplast products and markets are complementary to ours and we welcome its employees to the Johns Manville family.""


Europe's First Composite Armoured Fighting Vehicle Tested

Britain tested its first composite armoured fighting vehicle earlier this month, which showed that the composite would be the armour of choice in future battlefields. Stealth could be further enhanced through the use of rubber band tracks and other innovations that are currently in development. The chief aim of the project so far was primarily to prove the viability of a composite hull although as yet there is no production application for the vehicle.

Advanced Glassfiber Yarns net sales for the year ended December 31, 2000 increased $26.1 million, or 10.3%, to $278.3 million as compared to $252.2 million in the year ended December 31, 1999. This increase was primarily due to higher demand in all markets, except in industrial products. The largest increases were in the electrical and the construction markets, with 22.8% and 14.5%, respectively.


GKN Composites Cut Weight of Transmission Support Fitting

A program intended to showcase GKN's rapid creation of manufacturing tools also has resulted in a significant modification to a critical component of the RAH-66 Comanche helicopter. GKN Aerospace, Inc., originally was just going to demonstrate its rapid prototype tooling capability. That demonstration was successful but carried an important side benefit -- a 30 percent reduction in the weight of a critical component for the Comanche helicopter.
