JEC 2001 Composites Show

The JEC 2000 was characterized by unprecedented levels of business and international activities, with 17,409 visitors and over 700 exhibitors. In 2000, 56% of visitors were from outside France and 85 countries were represented. The JEC Composites Show 2001 expects almost 800 exhibitors with, in particular, new materials, technologies and applications.

This feeling can only be developed if students are given the opportunity to gain engineering knowledge of advanced composites.


3TEX Introduces 3Carbonbillet

3TEX, Inc. a worldwide leader in developing next generation 3D preforms and composites, today announced it is introducing 3Carbonbillet. The product line includes preforms and composite billets and board stock 3D woven using the patented 3Weave process. This results in an integrated composite, which will not delaminate, allowing designers to take composites out of the mold and directly into the CNC/CAM, and tooling board arena, announced Brad Lienhart, President/CEO. 3Carbonbillet is being launched as a 3TEX commercial product line at the JEC 2001 Show on March 26 in Paris, France. The preforms and billet will be sold initially in 12"" and 18"" widths, and in 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1 1/2 inch thickness. 3Carbonbillet preforms and consolidated billets will be made from 12K and 48K carbon fiber. Consolidation of billets will be made generally with epoxy vinyl ester or epoxy modified resins in a resin infusion process. Special resins may be required for certain higher temperature tooling board applications.

Three to be Inducted as Fellows at SAMPE 2001

By unanimous decision of the Board of Directors of the Society for the Advancement of Material and Process Engineering, Dr. Louis A. Pilato, Pilato Consulting, Bound Brook, NJ; Mr. Gary W. Valentine, Sr. Manager Engineer Program, Raytheon Systems, El Segundo, CA; and Mr. Harry Katz, Utility Development, Livingston, NJ, will be inducted as SAMPE Fellows in acknowledgement of their distinguished contributions to advanced materials development and application. They will be honored at a banquet to be held Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at the Renaissance Hotel of Long Beach.

Approval for a New Water Cooling Tower System

Global Water Technologies, Inc., a company utilizing advanced technologies and engineered solutions to provide process cooling water to power plants, process industries and municipalities worldwide, today announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Psychrometric Systems, Inc. (PSI), has received Factory Mutual (FM) approval of its fiberglass (FRP) cooling tower design. This proprietary cooling tower system, referred to as Model CFU-FM, is currently available to its customers worldwide.


Prices Increase

Eastman Chemical Company announced a $0.02 per pound off-list price increase for all forms of Eastman NPG glycol in North America and Latin America, effective April 1, 2001. The company also announced a worldwide $0.045 per pound off-list price increase for Eastman purified isophthalic acid (PIA).


Vitro Fiberglass Subsidiary

Fiberglass maker Vitro Fibras, a subsidiary of Mexico's Grupo Vitro, has won the first-ever Ibero-American Quality Prize and is looking forward to sales growth of 6 percent during the current year, according to a report in Mexico City daily Reforma. Vitro Fibras makes 25 groups of fiberglass products, or approximately 5,000 product types, that are utilized by companies such as automakers and home-appliance manufacturers. Company CEO Carlos Jaime Valdez Garza said at least 70 percent of the firm's output is sold on the Mexican market, with the remainder exported to countries such as the United States and Canada, and to export markets in Latin America. Vitro Fibras operates four plants in Mexico -- in Mexico City, Monterrey, Mexicali and San Luis Potosi. It has sales offices in Houston, Texas and in Argentina.
