Infrastructure Composites Report

31 July 2001

The “Infrastructure Composites Report-2001” forecasts that the Infrastructure Sector of Industrial Markets for “Emerging” FRP composites applications will grow by over 500% between 2000 and 2010.

The North American market value of fabricated FRP composite structures for emerging infrastructure applications is estimated at $113 million today and will grow to $847 million by 2010 (750% increase over 10 years). The Worldwide market value is forecast at $268 million today, and will grow to $1.4 billion by 2010 (525% increase over 10 years).

The global building, civil construction, waterfront, concrete repair/strengthening, and utilities markets are changing rapidly. The deterioration of the installed infrastructure due to corrosion, aging, weather, accident, under-design, and damaging events like earthquakes is leading to increased opportunities for new materials and structures as part of a major thrust to Infrastructure Renewal. Extreme budget constraints and disruptions to infrastructure users increasingly force the search for new solutions. FRP composites offer innovative and cost effective solutions to the age-old problems.

Systems designs using fiber-reinforced polymer composites are altering who does what, with what materials and designs, and with what processes. New technologies for this marketplace, such as vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) or infusion, high-speed pultrusion, filament winding, engineered fabric preforms, low-cost carbon, glass and aramid fibers, hybrid materials and structures, and other developments, all are altering old competitive material and supplier relationships.

FRP composites now are recognized as offering the hope and possibility of displacing traditional materials - e.g., steel, reinforced concrete, aluminum, and wood. Factors such as parts consolidation, speed of installation, eliminating traffic disruptions, and shortening access restriction to facilities are being favorably impacted through the use of FRP composites. Responding to these changes, Composites Worldwide, Inc. has completed its 885-page, comprehensive market study to give clients the big picture and real perspective on some of the most significant developments in the world, from the viewpoint of highly experienced observer-analysts. The new study is organized in a way that helps the reader see the trends and opportunities globally - and to see the competitive threats stemming from these new developments.
