ATP's Marion Composites Completes Design Review

09 February 2001

Advanced Technical Products, Inc., announced today that its Marion Composites division and Boeing have completed Critical Design Review (CDR) for a new F/A-18E/F radome. Marion Composites is currently conducting the Boeing program for design, development and qualification of the new radome. The F/A-18E/F aircraft is being fitted with a new radar/weapon system that utilizes Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar and will require a new radome. Boeing selected the Marion Composites radome based on its wideband performance and compatibility with the new radar and F/A-18E/F aircraft requirements. The sandwich radome will utilize new technology developed by Marion Composites over the last seven years. The radome is constructed of alternate layers of Quartz/Cyanate Ester laminate and a low dielectric closed cell foam. Manufacturing technology developed for radome fabrication utilizes a proprietary process including precision machining of individual layers to achieve the required electrical performance. The radome program has progressed through the design stages and the CDR was completed in December 2000. The first radome now in fabrication will be completed early this year in support of Boeing testing and qualification. Marion Composites produces a wide variety of aerospace composite structures, shelters, and relocatable hospitals, and is the world's leading manufacturer and designer of radomes for high-performance jet aircraft. Advanced Technical Products, Inc.'s operating divisions include Marion Composites, Lincoln Composites, Intellitec and Lunn Industries. ATP designs, develops, and manufactures high-performance radomes, aircraft components, rocket motor cases, pressure vessels, fuel tanks, shelter systems and other advanced composite products utilizing various production capabilities.
