Composite replaced on Lockheed Martin F-22 fighter

29 March 2000

The F-22 contractor team is replacing the original composite rib with a titanium one on the plane's flaperon, the inboard movable trailing edge of the wing. The original rib had delaminated while exceeding its load limit, according to the Air Force. Lockheed Martin is repairing EMD aircraft 4001 and 4002, and plans to resume flight testing before the end of the month. The newest EMD plane, aircraft 4003, is to be returned for the flaperon fix, while all following aircraft are to have the new titanium rib.
