Airlines Fortify Cockpit Doors

29 March 2000

Airlines are looking for ways to reinforce cockpit doors following an incident this month in which a 250-pound man attacked a co-pilot, lunged for the controls and shouted: ``I'm going to kill you.'' The airline industry has been discussing ways to use strong yet lightweight composite materials to make the door and the wall separating the cockpit from the rest of the plane more resistant to attacks, including gunfire. Airline experts believe that incidents involving drunken and unruly passengers have grown in recent years, but there is little data available.
