Royal Navy Minesweeper Launched at Southampton

11 July 2000

HMS BLYTH, the penultimate Minehunter in the Royal Navy's Sandown Class, was launched on Wednesday. HMS BLYTH is the sixth of a batch of seven ships ordered from Vosper Thornycroft in 1994. The class incorporates a significant number of design improvements. The ships in this class are constructed from fibre reinforced plastic and are designed for hunting and destroying mines and for operating in deep and exposed waters. Sandown Class vessels are exceptionally manoeuvrable, control being achieved either manually or automatically by use of the ship's Position Control System.
