This year’s International AVK Conference took place from 22 to 23 September, 2008 at the Congress Center Ost, Messe Essen (Essen Fairground).

Once again, this conference was a prelude to the Composites Europe trade fair that opened its doors during the same time period as the Aluminium Fair; i.e., from 23 to 25 September, 2008.

The 450 conference participants (one third of whom came from Europe as well as from overseas) profited from a programme that offered cutting-edge information along with practical applicational examples relating to reinforced and filled plastics. The programme was rounded off by a third series of lectures in conjunction with the 6th N-FibreBase Congress, which focused on the broad range of topics regarding biomaterials.

After the opening address delivered by Jürgen H. Aurer, Chairman of the AVK Board, this year’s winners were awarded the AVK Innovation Award during the Composites Night (the AVK get-together), which took place on the first day of the conference at the Essen Philharmonic Hall. The following winners were nominated for 2008:

In the industrial category, the Voestalpine company won the race for their ’EASI – a new member of the GMT family’; while the ’environmental award’ was presented to the DSM company for their new environmentally friendly UP resin system. The Fachhochschule Dortmund [Dortmund Polytechnic] won first prize in the academic category for their ’Fibretemp’ process allowing efficient heating of surface areas.

Honorary guest speaker was Prof. Dr. Andreas Pinkwart, Minister for Innovation, Science, Research, and Technology of North Rhine-Westphalia.

The next International AVK Conference is to take place on 26-27 October, 2009 at the ICS, Messe Stuttgart (Stuttgart Fairground).
