Airborne International is a company specialised in the engineering and manufacturing of composite products, with a focus on the aerospace and marine sectors. The vision of the company centers around making composites affordable, by automation and digital manufacturing. Its Airborne Composites Automation centre (ACA) is developing and supplying solutions for automated manufacturing, such as a suite of tools which can be used on a flexible robot platform to enable the automated manufacturing of composite parts with highly flexible, low investment equipment. The company has its facilities in Ypenburg (NL), Hoogerheide (NL), Lambourn (UK) and Girona (Spain) with in total a dynamic group of about 130 employees.

AEL Airborne is the UK business unit of Airborne specialising in engineering, prototyping and production of large composite structures. Best known for expertise designing and building tidal turbine blades, AEL Airborne is now applying its expertise towards other structures where fatigue and challenginging operating environments demand understanding of aged materials properties and experience of manufacturing large composite structures.

The role of Engineering Manager is to manage the technical functions of AEL Airborne in the UK. You will manage the current engineering team consisting of composite design engineers, R&D engineers, CAD draftspeople, project engineers and tooling engineers. Engineering is sometimes offered on a consultancy basis however the bulk of the projects lead into prototyping and manufacturing and so the role includes overseeing the transition into production. You will provide mentoring and senior level engineering experience to guide the engineering team with final technical authority on site to sign off projects.

The Engineering Manager is a critical member of the site managament team, and will also contribute to the overall development of the site and its cabability including ISO, organisation, processes and efficiency.

Your responsibilities are:

  • Oversee and sign off engineering of complex composite structures
  • To manage a team of engineers to achieve project goals
  • To develop engineering solutions to increase competitiveness of AEL Airborne
  • To consider how automation (supported by Group) could be implemented in products engineered by AEL Airborne.
  • Working with other engineers and production to develop manufacturing concepts.
  • Manage customer and certification body liaison.
  • Assist with development of commercial proposals providing design methodology proposals and cost estimates.
  • Contribute to site development including ISO, HR policies, efficiency and productivity
  • Writing and approving of design and test reports 

Job Requirements


  • MSc level degree in Engineering specialising in Mechanical or Structural Engineering or similar.

Work experience

  • Minimum of ten years of experience including experience with Finite Element Analysis
  • Experience with marine structures would be an advantage however due to a varied project portfolio, experience in a variety of applications would be preferred.
