TeXtreme Sponsored Team Wins Formula Student

17 July 2012

The 2012 Formula Student UK competitions at the Silverstone race circuit took place between the 11th and 15th July, 2012, and resulted in a victory for the Chalmers Formula Student team from Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden.

According to Oxeon, Formula Student is the world’s largest competition for engineers, and is described as “The competition challenges student engineers to design, build and race a single seat racing car in one year. The cars are then judged on their speed, acceleration, handling and endurance in a series of time-trial races, while the teams are tested on their design, costing and business presentation skills”

Oxeon explains that TeXtreme has been successfully used in Formula 1 for many years and almost as long as there has been teams in Formula Student. Oxeon has supported the Chalmers Formula student team with TeXtreme carbon reinforcements for many years and are glad to see results of the cooperation.

Jens Kjellerup, member of the Chalmers Formula Student team says “We have used TeXtreme in basically all carbon composite parts on the car. The stiffness surpasses our demands which give an advantage regarding performance. The benefits of TeXtreme is that it is light and strong, our composite parts weighs considerably less compared to if using other carbon materials. During the competition the officials and judges estimated our wing package to 17kg, but they were wrong, it weighs only 10kg, thanks to TeXtreme.”

“Chalmers University’s car is a masterpiece of engineering that makes a worthy winner. As well as being one of the fastest cars, it also performed consistently and impressively in the static events,” Andrew Deakin, Formula Student Vice Chairman, comments.

Oxeon says that four of the top five teams in Formula Student UK 2012 are using TeXtreme as their principal composite reinforcement, leading to notable results. TU Munich won the sprint event, and DUT Racing won the design event, to mention some other good performances from Silverstone.

A selection of teams using TeXtreme in Formula Student 2012 are as follows:
• Chalmers Formula Student - Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden (1th place)
• DUT Racing – Delft University, Netherlands (2nd place)
• TU Munich – Technical University Munich, Germany (4th place)
• Rennteam Stuttgart – University of Stuttgart, Germany (5th place)

In total there are almost 20 Formula Student teams benefitting from TeXtreme Spread Tow carbon reinforcements worldwide.

ACMA Seeks Entries to their ACE Competition

06 December 2011

Competition for the 2012 Awards for Composites Excellence (ACE), hosted by the American Composites Manufacturers Association (ACMA), is now open.
The ACE program is designed to recognise outstanding achievement and innovation in technology, manufacturing and product development.

“ACE awards are given to products which are judged to have significant market impact and presence while exemplifying the use of composites,” says ACMA President Lori Luchak of Miles Fiberglass & Composites.  “They recognise design and engineering superiority in traditional and emerging markets as well as improvements and innovation in equipment and manufacturing processes. The winning products represent the best of the best in our industry.”

The ACE competition is divided into three categories: design, manufacturing and market growth. ACMA say two awards are presented in each category, ranging from the Innovation in Green Technology Award for design to the Infinite Possibility Award for market growth. Competition for all categories is open to composites manufacturers. Equipment suppliers, software developers, end-users and academics are eligible to compete for specific awards.

2012 ACE winners will be showcased at COMPOSITES 2012, which will be held February 21-23 in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Backed by more than two decades of experience and a proven track record of delivering for attendees and exhibitors, COMPOSITES is the top event of its kind in North America, attracting participants from more than 650 companies in 40 countries.

The deadline for entries for the 2012 ACE competition is December 31.

Infrastructure Composites Report

31 July 2001

The “Infrastructure Composites Report-2001” forecasts that the Infrastructure Sector of Industrial Markets for “Emerging” FRP composites applications will grow by over 500% between 2000 and 2010.

The North American market value of fabricated FRP composite structures for emerging infrastructure applications is estimated at $113 million today and will grow to $847 million by 2010 (750% increase over 10 years). The Worldwide market value is forecast at $268 million today, and will grow to $1.4 billion by 2010 (525% increase over 10 years).

The global building, civil construction, waterfront, concrete repair/strengthening, and utilities markets are changing rapidly. The deterioration of the installed infrastructure due to corrosion, aging, weather, accident, under-design, and damaging events like earthquakes is leading to increased opportunities for new materials and structures as part of a major thrust to Infrastructure Renewal. Extreme budget constraints and disruptions to infrastructure users increasingly force the search for new solutions. FRP composites offer innovative and cost effective solutions to the age-old problems.

Systems designs using fiber-reinforced polymer composites are altering who does what, with what materials and designs, and with what processes. New technologies for this marketplace, such as vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) or infusion, high-speed pultrusion, filament winding, engineered fabric preforms, low-cost carbon, glass and aramid fibers, hybrid materials and structures, and other developments, all are altering old competitive material and supplier relationships.

FRP composites now are recognized as offering the hope and possibility of displacing traditional materials - e.g., steel, reinforced concrete, aluminum, and wood. Factors such as parts consolidation, speed of installation, eliminating traffic disruptions, and shortening access restriction to facilities are being favorably impacted through the use of FRP composites. Responding to these changes, Composites Worldwide, Inc. has completed its 885-page, comprehensive market study to give clients the big picture and real perspective on some of the most significant developments in the world, from the viewpoint of highly experienced observer-analysts. The new study is organized in a way that helps the reader see the trends and opportunities globally - and to see the competitive threats stemming from these new developments.
