Polymat FR Offers Significantly Higher Mechanical Properties

Polymat FR, an innovative 3D reinforcement textile, has been developed by Scott & Fyfe specifically for high performance composite applications where strength, weight reduction and fire performance are critical parameters – for example, in the transportation, construction and marine sectors.

Intended for closed moulding processes including RTM & L-RTM, Scott & Fyfe describe the textile as having a uniquely designed core composed from glass yarns knitted with an architecture that allows for fast resin flow even when combined with highly filled resin systems. It says that this leads to improved productivity, reduced rework and an ability to satisfy the highest levels of fire retardancy for composite parts, such as EN45545-2 for the rail industry (up to level HL3).

In addition, Scott & Fyfe claims that the products novel knitted glass core also provides a significant contribution to the mechanical properties of the laminate versus similar ‘flow mat’ type products that utilise a polypropylene fibre core. Scott & Fyfe says that structural tests completed on test panels, under identical conditions, produced the following results:

  • Flexural Strength increased from 180 MPa to 218 MPa, offering a significant 21% improvement.

  • Tensile Strength increased from 56 MPa to 86 MPa, offering a massive 54% increase.

“Polymat FR offers engineers and designers a more technologically advanced solution to the challenge of creating strong, lightweight structures in GRP that still comply with the various fire and regulatory requirements. Thanks to its novel glass core, it may be possible to reduce laminate thickness, and thereby weight, whilst achieving comparable mechanical strength properties – particularly attractive benefits to the mass transit sectors,” added Michael Harrison, Business Director, Scott & Fyfe.
