Hexagon Lincoln has been a member of the Hexagon Composites Group of companies since 2005. The Group develops and supplies composite cylinders for storage and transportation of liquefied petroleum gas, compressed natural gas, biomethane, compressed hydrogen gas, and other industrial gases.
Hexagon Lincoln has been making filament-wound fuel tanks since before America sent a man to the moon. Our heritage began in 1963 with filament-wound rocket motor cases. Soon after we expanded into high-pressure composite vessels for aircraft, missile, satellite, and launch vehicle programs. This experience made us a logical choice when NASA needed lightweight vessels for its manned missions. In fact, many of the components and pressure vessels on the Space Shuttle were built by us.
Since then, we have designed and developed over 80 configurations of high-performance, filament-wound pressure vessels, using liners of aluminum, steel, titanium, Inconel®, plastic, and rubber with structural laminates using a variety of fiber and resin combinations. Our products have also been used for aircraft emergency power, ejection systems, Skylab oxygen tanks, life raft inflation and breathing cylinders.
Several patents, including one for a boss-to-liner interface for plastic-lined, high-pressure cylinders, distinguish Hexagon Lincoln as a leader in the composite pressure vessel field. We were the first manufacturer to qualify a pressure vessel for certification to the ASME Code, Section X in 1977 and the first manufacturer to certify an all-composite Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) container to the ANSI/CSA NGV2 standard.
Development of the Hexagon Lincoln Type 4 NGV fuel container began in 1990. This effort resulted in the TUFFSHELL® brand of pressure vessels. The TUFFSHELL® Type 4 was certified to ANSI/CSA NGV2 in 1993, CSA B-51 Part 2 in 1995, ISO 11439 and KHK Technical Standard No. 9 in 1998 and ECE R110 in 2006. Today, as the largest Type 4 manufacturer in the world, Hexagon Lincoln focuses solely on commercial pressure equipment development. You’ll find our TUFFSHELL® tanks in passenger cars, transit buses and heavy duty vehicles across the globe.
In 2006, Hexagon Lincoln began development on the largest all-composite commercial pressure vessel in the world. The TITAN® cylinder and storage module was designed specifically for bulk transportation of large amounts of compressed natural gas. You’ll find TITAN® and SMARTSTORE® in regions that are not currently served by natural gas pipelines. They are approved and widely used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Peru, Dominican Republic, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Europe and Russia. TITAN® 5 is not available in North America.
